Texas South (STSR) Referees deliver outstanding performance at Region 3 Youth Tournament in Raleigh , NC

Congratulations to all the members of the South Texas referee delegation at the Region III Youth tournament in Raleigh, NC this past week. Our members performed above and beyond, getting many compliments from tournament officials, players, and coaches, as well as numerous recognitions. Led by SYRA Paul Hooks, with Operations Manager Michael Day assisting, were referees Suzanne Bilbrey, Alex Cantu, Hayden Edwards, Ismail Elfath, Hector Flores, Chris Gordon, Javier Guerra, Ricky Hernandez, Curtis Landrum (STYSA Youth Referee of the Year), Brad Meekins, Marcel Theriot, Pedro Trejo, and Armando Villarreal. Attending as assessors were Ed Czerwinski, Diana Esquival, Harlan Matthews, and Dave Olmos (Regional Staff Assessor Mentor).

 

South Texas again demonstrated why we are among the premier state associations, with almost every referee receiving quarter final games and either a semi-final or final game (we did unfortunately suffer one injury to a referee in the early games which kept him from continuing). Included in those doing semi-final games was Curtis Landrum, who in spite of being a rookie at Regionals, was assigned an AR slot on a boys u18 game and performed outstandingly. Referees receiving finals assignments were Ismail (u17 girls center), Hector (u19 boys fourth official), Brad Meekins (u18 boys center), Marcel (u18 girls fourth official), and Armando Villarreal (u19 boys center). All received high marks for their performances.

 

At the awards banquet the night before final games, recognized as Outstanding Assistant Referees were Ismail, Chris and Curtis.. Recognized as Outstanding Referees were Alex, Armando, Brad, Ismail, Hayden and Hector, and selected to attend the National tournament in Little Rock were Brad and Armando, In addition, Harlan was recognized with the Trailblazer award for most outstanding assessor/mentor to youth referees.

 

Other South Texas notables in attendance were Regional Tournament Referee Mentors Jasen Anno, Gibby Widner, and Sergio Vega.
