South Texas Soccer Referees Loses a Friend!

The South Texas Soccer Referee Community lost a very dear friend recently. Javier Matamoros passed away December 2, 2007 in San Antonio, Texas.

A Memorial Service was held in San Anotnio, Texas for Javier on Tuesday, December 18th, at Randolph Air Force Base. Javier's family, friends from work and soccer attended.

Javier was a long time soccer aficionado with the United States Soccer Federation and held many key positions with South Texas Soccer Referee Association as well as an honorary board member of the Soccer Referee Association of El Paso. Those of us who knew Javier, knew he was one of the most giving and friendly people who ever walked on this earth. His energy and drive were always inspiring; on and off the soccer field. Even when he was sick and tired, he would never say no. . He was very knowledgeable to the game we all love. The entire soccer community will miss him greatly, the community will miss him and more than anything, his family. One referee summed up Javier's committment to the South Texas referees with this letter to Javier.

Javier,

You were there as one of the first assessors that ever saw me when I was just starting to grow as a referee. I can vividly remember your eagerness to want to help me and all others that day, five years ago, back at Lindsay Lyons Park for the Youth State Cup. Look at where we all are now!!

You will now be mentoring us on not in your debriefings, but always, all around us, with every whistle we blow. Your kindness, spirit, and love for the game will forever live on in all of us that you have touched so profoundly by your smile and encouragement. You will forever hold a dear place in my heart!

May you rest in peace!

Our prayers are with the Matamoros Family during this very difficult time! He leaves behind his mom, two brothers and a sister; all of El Paso.
