Houston-bred MLS players Chris Gbandi, Arturo Alvarez, Ricky Lewis, Josh Gardner
& Davy Arnaud, as well as HFA players like Garrett Grinsfelder and Edwin Rivera,
will take part in the Soccer Hour with Glenn Davis' All-Star Game for Soccer
Awareness on December 21 at Pin Oak Middle School in Bellaire. Kickoff at 7:30
pm; admission is free. The game also will include former pros and top college
and amateur players. Referees for the game will be 3 Houston based national

STSR referees John Lohr and Oscar Ortiz were selected to attend
the Donnelly Cup, January 13-16, in Tampa, Florida. As part of each Regional
Select Teams Tournament, Men's and Women's State Select Teams compete for a
Regional Select Teams Championship. The four regional winners are then invited
to participate in the George F. Donnelly Cup Tournament. This event establishes
the National Championship for State Select Teams.
"China Spring resident Marlaina Weisl was the first woman to referee
a Major Indoor Soccer League match in Los Angeles in the early 1980s, and this
year she has been named the first female president of the Central Texas Soccer
Referee Association, which provides referees throughout McLennan and Bell counties."
So begins an article in the October 6 Waco Tribune-Herald.
The article goes on to discuss Weisl's history with soccer in general and refereeing
in particular. In it she explains what she feels is the difference in how referees
and coaches approach the game. She says that coaches have winning as their goal
while "referees are there for the safety of the players and to be sure everyone
is just having fun."

Tim Sparks writes:
The Project I am working on here in China has a multi-headed Owner - Aramco,
ExxonMobil and Sinopec. ABB/SEI are acting as the PMC for the project, so as a
teambuilding event, they decided to have a football (that's soccer to you Americans)
game between the Owners and the PMC. (I am an ABB employee.)
I couldn't resist volunteering to referee and they were excited to have a 'Professional Referee' for the event. I showed them my registration cards for instructor and referee that I keep in my wallet and assured them that I could referee.
Well, although I had my registration cards I didn't have my 'ref stuff', so since both teams were going to be in full uniform, I didn't want to appear amateurish so I went shopping and I found a book and flags and a Fox40 whistle at one of the stores. The book and flags are Korean in brand.
I couldn't find a uniform so they sent a driver one day to look and sure enough he came back with a shirt and short. But no socks. Found some all black 90s turf cleats, but not my size, so I used my running shoes and short socks.
Only problem was the emblem on the left pocket of the shirt said FIFA... HAH! Good thing was it was not a standard FIFA badge... just two worlds together with the letters FIFA under it, so I didn't worry. Hopefully that does not put me in trouble with USSF.
Match day was very interesting. I was told that of course a tie was best... and it would be a 'scandal' if the PMC won.
The game was held at the Asian Games complex. At the event, I had two volunteers for AR. Both were players. One was really a referee. The other was clueless. Neither on spoke much English, so I abandoned the pre-game. I got both coaches together and with a lot of gestures we decided that 40 mins was long enough. I got a coin toss with the captains, again very little English... I let the Owners call it... then the speeches started.
The big bosses from each company gave a speech and then they introduced me in broken English as a 'USSF International, Professional Referee'... what a build up. My speech... 'I am happy to be able to referee this game today and consider it an honor and I am sure we will have a good game." Then it was translated to Chinese for the masses... applause and then the teams were told to 'listen to the referee'.
I had them line up on the touch line and we paraded out to the center in two lines. As I started out I turned around and they were not following me, so I waved to them to come along. We lined up facing the crowd and waved and then shook hands and we lined up for the game.
BTW: The field was a turf field lined for field hockey. No areas, no center circle... but there was a penalty mark. At one point during the game, there was a handling call about 10 yards from the goal line, but since there was no area, and since it was an owner, I just called for a free kick. No arguments.
The language of football really is an international one. I had Saudis, Brits, Americans, Chinese and some other 'ese' I'm sure. Didn't have to say a word. One time after a deflection by a defender that the GK picked up, one of the Saudis in broken English asked if the GK could pick a ball up played to him. I told him the ball was not played but was deflected, and that he was right, that if it had been played it was an IFK... nothing else said.
Game was very slow, but had its moments. One was a corner kick and one of the players, who was kind of a problem child, was defending and looking for me as they lined up. I was already staring at him knowing by his body language that he was getting ready to do something. His eyes finally found me and locked with mine and he just kind of relaxed... PK averted... that was great. I took a position just so he could see me.
PMC ended up winning 2-1. I kept on saying 'One more minute' until I had added 8 minutes... I couldn't wait any longer for them to equalize and everyone was running out of gas so I called it.
Big fun... they were very impressed... 'Wow, you really are professional' were the types of comments, so US Referees were well represented that day... to those people anyway. The Owners and the PMC were pleased. I protected everyone. I was biased, but in a reasonable manner. All understood perfectly.
Everyone knows me at the office now and they smile... that's a good thing.
Doubt it'll have much international impact... but I did what I could. Just thought you might be interested.
Thanks for sharing, Tim. Glad everyone enjoyed the experience. (By the way, some guy named "Sepp" called for you.)
Of course we have photos... Tim with the teams Tim and his "crew"
MLS teams the Colorado Rapids and Real Salt Lake City played an exhibition match in La Porte March 19. The crew had a strong Texas flavor: Referee Carlos Valenzuela (California North) and from Texas South AR1 Edouard Groguhe, AR2 Darren Engers, 4th Official Michael Brow. The match ended in a 2-2 tie.
On March 26, the Rapids played FC Dallas (formerly the Burn) in Austin. The crew was all STSR: Referee Jair Marrufo, AR1 Darren Engers, AR2 Jeff Kattawar, and 4th Michael Brow. The match was won by FC Dallas 2-1.
Four members of STSR (and over 7,000 other folks) ran the
Houston Marathon January 16 and finished in fine fashion.
Jon Bonilla of Corpus Christi finished at #259 with a time of 3:16:34
(Jon is a member of the Hearing Committee).
Matt Mechler of Sugar Land finished at #285 with a time of 3:18:11.
Greg Boles of Bellaire finished at #357 with a time of 3:22:38.
Edouard Groguhe of Angleton finshed at #425 with a time of 3:26:04.
This just in, from Jon Bonilla:
I ran the Austin Marathon on 2-13-05 with a time of 3:23:52. Temperature
was twice as warm at start as Houston was and temperature at finish time was
about 75 degrees. Humidity was very high due to rains in area at start time.
Nice going, gentlemen!
(We have photos of Matt and Greg.)
This was posted on the SocRef-L site:
Just returned from two very enjoyable trips to Texas. First to Austin from Nov. 26-30 for the College Coaches Classic and boys' ODP tournaments, and then to Dallas Dec. 5 and 6 for the Storm Showcase.
I've said this before and I'll gladly say it again.... if you want to go to a tournament where you'll get good games, be treated royally, and have a ton of fun, then go to any tournament in which Michelle Maloney or Rick Troup oversee the referee program. They are, without doubt, the two nicest tournament administration folks I've ever met. First and foremost, they have the referees' interests at heart, and they do everything possible to ensure that every referee has abundant opportunity to make the most of his or her time in Texas.
Austin was cold and windy (what would you expect the day after Thanksgiving?). But the fields at Northeast Metro (site of the 2004 Regionals) were in good shape, especially considering that for a couple of weeks leading up to tournament time Texas had tried to do an imitiation of Florida during a hurricane (rain, rain, rain, and more rain). The competition was very good at the Coaches' Classic, and VERY good at the U-15 and U-18 ODP. Lots of opportunity for referees to work games likely more competitive than they typically see at home. Many college coaches were there so the players were on their best behavior for the most part.
Anyway, if you can get an invitation from Michelle or Rick (or both) I **urge** you to accept. Unless you totally screw up an assignment or do something really stupid (professionally) you will have a lot of fun -- guaranteed.

It was not just a regular soccer game this day as it was the last international assignment for Kevin Terry and Jesus Guerra. At the end of the 2004 season Kevin will be retiring as a FIFA Referee, and STSR's own Jesus Guerra will be retiring as a National Referee. We wish them both luck, and want to thank them for the time and effort they put into the National Referee Program.
The 2004 US Women's Soccer Olympic Champions played the women's national team of Ireland at Reliant Stadium on Saturday, October 23, as part of the National Team's Fan Celebration Tour. US veterans Mia Hamm, Joy Fawcett and Julie Foudy were in action with the national team before they retire at the conclusion of the tour.
With over 16,900 vocal and enthusiastic fans in attendance, the USWNT won 5-0. The game combined the USWNT past and future, with Mia Hamm assisting on four goals, and all five US goals scored by rising star Abby Wambach, a USWNT record.
The referee for the match was Kari Seitz. She was assisted by two STSR National Referees, Paul Hooks and Jeff Kattawar. The fourth official was Shelly Landry of Sugar Land.

The Everton v Pachuca match played at Reliant Stadium July 29 had a definite Texas flavor. The officiating crew was all STSR: Shown left to right in the attached photo, they were AR1 Darren Engers (Austin), Fourth Official Masoud Rasti (San Antonio), Referee Jair Marrufo (El Paso), AR2 Jeff Kattawar (Austin).
August 1 saw Everton play Club America. The referee crew for that match was almost all STSR: Shown left to right in the attached photo, they were AR2 Masoud Rasti (San Antonio), Fourth Official Carlos Clark (Houston), Referee Ricardo Salazar (Chicago), AR1 Mike Brow (Austin).
Congratulations all around!
Oh, yeah, Everton 5 - Pachuca 2 and Everton 1 - Club America 3... in case you wanted to know.
Attached are just four of the 140 pictures from the
Mission Trip to Arad, Romania, I took April 29 to May 9 this year.
Picture 497 is the house that
we worked on. The men worked on filtering the sand, mixing the mortar (plaster)
and keeping the experienced plaster men busy, and cleaning up. The women primed
the window frames and stained the doors and frames.
Picture 501 is the Tudoran family
who will live in the house. It is a family of husband, wife and six children.
Picture 529 is the happy family
and crew of workers from Arad and Houston who accomplished their mission goal.
Picture 533 is a picture of
myself with four year old Marina. Marina is a resident of Casa Sperantei (Hope
House). It is a half way house to take in abandoned and orphaned children to
provide a home-like atmosphere for children waiting adoption and can provide
for the child until age 18 if not adopted. The Houston Chapter of Romanian Christian
Enterprises ( I am the chapter president) provides nearly all of the financial
support for Hope House.
If anyone would like to see more of the pictures I would be happy to show them.
Thanks for your support,

Michelle Maloney sent a picture of the latest crop of
Assessors from the clinic in Pflugerville last March.
Here they are. (That's David

Randy Francis sends pictures from the STYSA Regionals at Lindsey Lyons.
Curt Berry has provided more pictures from the Dallas Cup.
From Curt Berry: Just before Dallas Cup, I took a bunch of pictures of the Region I 5A Boys Final; Courtney Jackson, Daniel Miller, Carlos Salas were on the game. The first file is pictures from that match. Then, at the 2004 Dallas Cup, I took tons of pictures. I included any pictures that included South Texas referees, especially CASRA members.

I just wanted to take the time to tell you what a great job the young Padre refs are doing. Not only do they take the time and effort to referee our kids, they also are taking more time to help the girls out by explaining the rules and how to's. That is such a big help when the younger kids are playing and are new or nervous. I love to see them explain soccer to them and the girls are more apt to learn and appreciate the game more.
Please tell all the referees thanks and keep up the good work!
Sincerely,
Wende Dlabaja (I coach with Scott Dinkens)
Daniel Miller (Austin), Tim McCurley (Port Neches), James Spencer (Huntsville) and Amy Mahan (San Antonio) participated in the Tampa Sun Bowl over Christmas in Tampa, Florida. All four Referees received high level games and represented Texas South with the highest level of professionalism. Here are Dan, Tim and Amy: STSR1.jpg. The tall one is James: STSR2.jpg.
Great job!
Dustin Downs (Austin), Matt Mechler (Sugar Land) and Carlos Salas (Kyle) represented STSR and South Texas at the highest level during the Disney Cup held in Orlando, FL December 27-30.
The Assignor, Cheryl Groth, personally complemented their performance to Paul Hooks on the day before the finals. She confided that all of the complex directors and assessors had told her that all three of our State Referees were among the top referees of the tournament.
As evidence, all three of them were given Semi-Final Center Referee assignments of U16 & U17s.
Job Well Done!
Players and spectators never really give a thought to what a Referee does to make a living…what a Referee does for a living, is often taken for granted… a Referee has no feelings… a Referee is someone to blame if the game does not go the right way… a Referee is someone that goes out on a weekend, chases players around the field, gets shouted at and leaves with very little money for a day's work.
On September the 12th, we saw what a Referee really is… Referees are not just someone that spends the weekend away from their family… a Referee has not just a passion for the game, but for life itself… a Referee is a Salesman, an Engineer, an Accountant, a Teacher, a Musician, a Policeman, and even a Doctor.
Dave Bolsen, from San Antonio, passed out on Saturday after the 12 minute run. At first it was thought Dave had tripped; however to those trained, Dave was in serious trouble. Had it not been for three men (Referees), Dave would not be with us today.
Calmly and instinctively, three men (Referees) took over, administered CPR, and kept Dave breathing until the ambulance came. And with the same calmness, the three quietly finished their physical and attended their respective clinic for the day.
I went to see Dave on the following Monday and he is getting better. The doctors found two (2) blockages. Dave stayed in the Hospital for the week and was sent home to San Antonio that Friday… he did find his car… his keys... and the hotel where he was staying.
If you were one of the three involved, Dave would like to thank you, and so would I. I know two of the three. Please help locate the EMT.
Thanks to Dr. Enrique Sanchez and Dr. Bob Wells.
Well done... Referee.
Randy
One of First Colony's (Sugar Land) new soccer referees, Dmitriy Shteyman, is featured in an article about the Olympic sport of pistol shooting in the Sunday, September 7, Houston Chronicle. Check out the article and picture on page 19B of the sports section. Dmitriy will also be featured by ABC Channel 13 in a news story on September 15th on their 4pm news program, so set your vcr.
You won't see Dmitriy on the soccer pitch the next two weekends as he'll be competing at the national championships this weekend and the Olympic tryouts in Atlanta, the 20th of September.
Let's all wish Dmitriy best of luck and hope to see him on the tube next summer from Athens.
STYSA has announced their Male and Female Youth Referees of the Year for 2003. They are Josh Blakely from El Paso and Jennifer Carpenter of Sugar Land, shown in the attached photo with Sergio Vega, SYRA and Randy Francis, SRA.
(Mr. Francis, the attached e-mail is about a referee that has a lot of noteworthy accomplishments. Please post it to the STSR website. Thanks.)
Some of you know our past Director of Referees, Eric Krygier. It is my displeasure to notify everyone that he will be leaving Houston for Indiana on May 4th. Eric was a great Director of Referees for this soccer club. He was in this volunteer position to help our youth referees become the best referees that they could. Even after his resignation from the chair of our referee committee he still helped us out with compensation until a new director of referees was elected.
Eric, even after resigning from the MCXSC Board of Directors is still an active MCXSC Referee and helps a lot with mentoring young referees (such as myself). Eric truly was, still is, and always will be of great value to the Montgomery County Xtreme Soccer Club and to the Xtreme Soccer Referee Association. ERIC, YOU WILL BE GREATLY MISSED!
Congratulations are also in order for Eric as he recently earned his Grade 06, State Referee Badge!

There is more to life than soccer. We have this report from Houston Referee
Earl Pierce:
Attached you will find a picture of
the house (80kb) in Romania that Ruth and I along with a group from church
worked on last year. We poured the concrete for the second story flooring and
moved the blocks for the second story up to the floor. On the right side of the
picture you will see the ramp we wheelbarrowed the concrete up. We are helping
to build this house so the family can adopt twin boys from Hope House. Hope House
is a halfway house for orphan and abandoned children giving them a place to live
in a family setting until they can be adopted. Hope House is home to sixteen children
where they receive love, tutoring and schooling. It is a project of Romanian Christian
Enterprises. The Houston chapter of RCE is attempting to provide for the monthly
needs of the home.
I am thrilled to see the progress on the house however much is still left to do.
STSR's own Mike Brow (Austin) has been invited by the USSF Referee development Program to attend the Referee Academy scheduled to coincide with the Manchester United Premier Cup U-14 World Finals that has been scheduled to be played in Beaverton, Oregon, July 17-20, 2003.
The Referee Development Academy will be held at the NIKE World Headquarters in Beaverton. NIKE will be responsible for arranging travel itineraries.
Academy staff will include the following members of the USSF National Instructional Staff: Esse Baharmast, Paul Tamberino and Alfred Kleinaitis.
This is tremendous recognition for Mike. He is one of only 18 referees nationwide selected for this Academy!
Well so much, for omens. Texas South sent thirteen (13) and we returned thirteen (13). In January 2003, at National Camp, in Phoenix, Arizona, they continued the quest for the National Badge. Everyone passed the requirements, and now proudly wears the 2003 National Badge.

Masoud Rasti – San Antonio
James Spencer (State Referee) reports: I might have something for you. Today (January 19), I ran and completed my first ever marathon, the HP Houston Marathon. Not having time to train for the race, I decided to put my fitness as a referee to the ultimate test. Therefore, I ran the race today with absolutely no training except the level of fitness I maintain to referee at a competitive level. I ran the entire 26.2 miles in 3:48:30 and averaged 8:43 per mile. For myself, this is a great accomplishment.
Congratulations are in order for Steve Eells on his performance recently on behalf of Texas South in Colorado Springs. We are all proud of his efforts and his following up on the directive to assist with the development of all instructors. Please extend the courtesies due Steve as he continues in the Improving Instructor Effectiveness (IIE) program.
Jim Babb started teaching advanced mathematics at Southwest High School this year. The school had no sports programs when Jim started. One of the teachers who has been there a couple of years, Rudy Rocha stated that a number of the students were soccer players. So, together Jim and Rudy started organizing a soccer team.
Rudy is a top level marathon runner so he has the background for fitness, and Jim has some playing experience and a lot of referee experience. They initially collaborated on a boys team, but in Jim's math class some of the young ladies expressed an interest in a girls team. Jim's response was that if enough ladies signed up, there would also be a girls team.
Rudy and Jim have received approval from the school administration to start a boys and a girls team. They are getting the medical and liability clearances signed and will probably start practice the first of December. Plans are to scrimmage any high school teams that are willing to meet them since they are too late to get into the scheduled high school season.
Southwest High School is a Charter School in Houston that serves primarily "at risk" students and students who do not fit the mold for regular high schools. Jim says, "I'm looking forward to working with the students to develop teamwork, fitness, and sportsmanship."
If you have a noteworthy accomplishment - yours or another referee's - that you'd like spotlighted, please send the details to Sam Ghalayini at sra@stsr.org.
